What is an awning?
An awning – otherwise known as an overhang – extends over a building to provide additional protection against the elements, alongside increasing living space and enhancing privacy. Awnings have a whole range of uses, effortlessly blending into any environment, and you’ll be pleased to know that they’re available in a variety of different designs, styles and materials to suit any taste.
What are the different types of awnings?
Patio awning
Extending over an outdoor space – whether this be a deck or patio – a patio awning is used to provide shade during hot weather, whilst also providing protection against rain showers. Not only this, they can enhance a home’s curb appeal too; awnings come in a range of colours and designs to perfectly match your home’s aesthetic. If the summer heat is making you a little lazy – worry not. Some of these can operate via a motor, simply requiring the push of a button to open.
Conservatory awning
Conservatory awnings are mounted to a home’s roof structure. They aim to make your home more comfortable, allowing you to adjust to certain weather conditions without needing to worry about the conservatory’s glass magnifying the heat. This awning cleverly blocks out the sun’s rays with a reflective fabric, maintaining a pleasant temperature for you inside.
Balcony awning
Want to kick back and relax on your balcony, terrace or veranda, but worried about succumbing to the heat? A balcony awning serves to prevent this, providing you with all the shade and privacy you could need when stepping out for a sunbathe. A balcony awning can be attached to overhangs, soffits or eaves, and it comes in a number of styles and fabrics to choose from.
Freestanding awning
A freestanding awning is a portable option, being one that has no fixtures to a building. Effectively acting as a shelter, you can use your freestanding awning anywhere to provide protection against the elements. This could be to prevent leaves from dropping into your pool during heavy winds, over your patio or decking to keep it in great condition and providing a sheltered place to sit – so whatever your reasoning, this awning is a versatile choice.
Vertical awning
Think window blind, but situated on the outside of your home – that’s the best way to describe a balcony awning. With a drop-arm design to slightly elevate them away from the wall, they work to provide heightened protection against the sun’s harsh rays, keeping you cool when you’re inside your home and ensuring optimum privacy.
Retractable awning
Again attached to the side of your home, a retractable awning can protect against harsh weather conditions as and when you need it. Their handy design allows you to fold them after use, and it doesn’t take up any unnecessary space in the process.
DIY bungee cord awning repair
One of the many ingenious ways to use bungee cords is in repairs – more specifically, when restringing an awning. Our superflex bungee cord is perfect in these scenarios, as it’s waterproof, abrasion-resistant, and flexible. So, if you’ve found yourself in a pickle and are looking for an easy yet cost-effective quick fix, you’re in the right place. All you’ll need to do is weave the bungee cord through grommets along the front edge of the awning – making sure to knot securely in place – which will then also tie around the parallel pole. After knotting again at the end, make sure to adjust the bungee cord’s tension, and you’re good to go!
