1. Hang your tools

Hanging tools will help you to utilise the wall space in your shed. There are a variety of ways to hang tools, including using hooks, pegs, or bungee cords. Simply stretch your bungee cord horizontally across the wall, and you’ll be able to easily slot tools in. This is ideal for larger equipment like shovels, rakes, and hoes. Just make sure there’s enough tension in the cord and your tools will be securely held up.

2. Organise bits and pieces

If you frequently find yourself rifling through drawers trying to find things, consider some drawer organisers. Although you can buy them for cheap, it’s also pretty easy to install a DIY storage system to keep your drawers organised. Use leftover strips of card or wood to create makeshift compartments within the drawer, or repurpose small trays and containers. Whatever you use, compartmentalising your drawer will make it much easier to find whatever you need, minus the stress.

3. Repurpose old furniture

If you’re storing old bookshelves or chests, why not repurpose them for shed storage? Pretty much any storage furniture can be utilised in a shed – you might already have something that you didn’t think to use. A quick sand and varnish can make any wooden shelving fit for purpose, and will make a stylish, cost-free addition to your shed.

Don’t just limit yourself to premade furniture – leftover pallets can be used for storage too. By standing them upright against walls, you can hang tools on pallets to save space and money. If you don’t have any lying around, there’s usually plenty of people giving them away for free.

4. Hang things on doors

Doors can serve as much more than just the entrance to your shed. Consider hanging tools and equipment on the inside of your door to make the most of every inch of space. Over the door hooks are ideal for this, or you can also create your own shelves and add hooks to hang things from. Stick to less bulky items for this, as larger tools will make it difficult to move past the door.

5. Use jars for screws and nails

Any shed is probably filled with screws and nails of all shapes and sizes. To keep them organised, jars or cans are a great addition to your shelving units. Not to mention, you can also repurpose old food containers for this purpose.

Group nails and screws by size and shape, so you’ll always be able to find the perfect fastener for your project. This goes for any other small bits and bobs which might easily get mixed up or lost.

It doesn’t make sense to keep your things scattered around the place, and this will only make things more confusing. We’re not suggesting you fix your furniture to the ceiling, but it can be a good use of space. It can be tempting to pack everything you can on top of a full shelf – but why not utilise the space underneath? A helpful hack is to super glue mason jar lids to the underside of your shelves. This way, you can store small items in jars under your shelves to create some extra space. All you’ll need to do is unscrew the bottom of your jar each time you want to grab something, then screw it back on when you’re done.

10. Organise seed packets

If you’re a keen gardener, you might find seed packets building up around your shed. Keeping these organised will help to reduce clutter and make them much easier to find – and there are many ways to do so.

A simple way to keep seeds together is by using a file or folder. Any folder will do, but lots of people find that photo albums can be ideal for storing seed packets. Small compartments are ideal for storing your seed packets and keeping them compactly stored. If you prefer a more decorative approach, try hanging your seed packets with pegs and string to have them up on display. This also makes them easy to grab straight from your wall.

11. Wrap up cords and hoses

Loose cords and hoses are a trip hazard and make garden sheds feel more disorganised. Keep pesky cords out of the way by wrapping them up or tying them together. You can use bungee cords to wrap up your hose or any other wires and keep them securely out of the way.
