If you’ve been inspired by the helpful uses of bungee cords to make life easier at home and out and about, you’ll love our guide on how to store and organise your bungee cords. Ditch annoying tangles or a cluttered mess, and work these creative bungee cord storage hacks into your lifestyle.
1. Wrap them with a bungee cord
Let’s get the simplest one out of the way first. If you have a big bunch of bungee cords, you can use one cord to wrap around the bundle to keep them neatly packed together. It doesn’t matter which type of bungee cord it is either – it’ll be long enough to bind the whole lot!
If your bundle of bungees could do with a bit more reinforcement – why not get some of our bungee cord hooks or rings to make your knot a little sturdier? Alternatively, check out our bungee cord knots if you’re struggling to knot your cord together.
2. Bungee cord pipe organiser

Bungee cord pipe organiser
A PVC pipe is a popular bungee cord organiser tool because of its great recyclability. All you need to do is measure out the lengths of the bungee cords you’re attaching to it from the top end of the pipe where the cords will hook onto. Once you’ve figured out the length of stretch you want for each bungee cord on the pipe, mark the pipe and drill the holes.
It’s a fantastic way to sort your bungee cords in length order too! Go the extra mile and grab a sharpie to mark the length underneath the hooked cord so you can quickly unhook the one you need.
3. Coat hangers
If you have a few coat hangers spare, or even just one, bungee cords can get a smart use out of them. Simply use cup hooks to attach to a hanger, and then hang your bungee cords to create a tidy organiser.
4. Cardboard organiser
For smaller bungee cords, use a strong thick piece of cardboard and punch holes in to hook all your cords to. You can then hang it up on the wall or keep it stored away in a drawer. Struggling to find a thick piece of cardboard? Consider stacking a few together and taping or glueing them with superglue to keep them in place. Then, you can punch or drill holes into them. It’s a great way to use up your cardboard recycling!
5. Ratchet strap hanger

Perfect for ratchet straps, but also bungee straps and bungee cords, a ratchet strap hanger can be easily attached to walls or space within your wardrobe or coat cupboard for a tidier home or workplace. You won’t lose sight of your bungee cords again, nor will you be tripping over them!
6. Cooling rack
You won’t believe the handy uses you can get from a cooling rack. If you have some spare, you can use them to stick notes on with magnets, hang up keys, sunglasses, jewellery, kitchen utensils, and your bungee cords. If you don’t have any spare, don’t worry, they’re cheap to pick up, and you can get them from pound shops. Simply hang them up vertically on some screws or nails in the wall and there you have it.
7. Chain links
Chains are also a fantastic organising tool. Best suited for garages, you can hang up light chains on the walls, and simply hook bungee cords in the links all the way down or across – however you hang the chains up.
8. Hang from a metal disc
If you’re feeling like a DIY guru, use a cabinet shelf, a metal threaded rod, and a metal disc to build a handy bungee cord hanger. Drill a hole in the shelf and drop the threaded rod through; this will help strengthen the shelf as well as attach to a metal disc to hang the bungee cords. Mount a metal disc (around four inches in size should be fine) to the bottom of the rod and drill holes around the perimeter of the disc to hook your bungee cords to.
9. Zip-lock bags
Don’t forget about those zip-lock bags. If you’re not feeling up to a DIY task, use these easy storage bags to organise your bungee cords by sorting and labelling your cord collection by colours or lengths etc. Because of how compact they are, they can then be easily stored in a box and tucked out of sight until you next need to use them.
10. Elastic bands
For a quick organiser if you’re in a hurry – just grab an elastic band or two and tie them around your bungee cords and store them where needed. You may need to have a few to tie around at certain points of your bundled bungee cords to keep them all together.
11. Recycle toilet roll holders
Instead of habitually heading to the paper recycling bin with toilet roll and kitchen paper towel holders, why not use them to organise your bungee cords? Bundle them together and neatly tuck them into the holders. Grab a marker pen and label them with the cord lengths.
12. Use a wire closet shelf

Hang up a wire closet shelf to your garage wall for a perfect way to store those bungee cords. You can hook cords – from both ends – of any size and a range of lengths to keep them attached horizontally. No tangles, tripping, or mess – just an impressive storage hack to keep you well-organised.
13. Store away balls and cords
With just two boards of wood and a few bungee cords, you can create a place to store all the children’s sports balls. Drill holes that line up into both the top and bottom wooden boards, and hook your bungee cords vertically to both boards. The elasticated storage hack is perfect for keeping things tidy, giving you more space, and for the family to easily and safely access.

14. Tie down bin liners
Another two-in-one hack is to use bungee cords to tie down bin liners to your bins. Whether they’re large, small, indoors, or outdoors, you can store away a bungee cord whilst keeping your bin bags in place. No more annoying bin liners moving around or falling down. This is especially good for outdoor bins to also keep the bin liners in place in breezy conditions. If the cord isn’t long enough, use two or more to hook together – easy.
15. Keep shopping in place when travelling
The last thing you want when you’ve done a big shop is to have your groceries spilled everywhere, or have to listen to bangs or falling items when you’re driving around. With a bungee cord, you can slide all your bags and hang them up onto the cord to keep them standing upright. Just stretch across the bungee cord on both sides of the boot of your vehicle and slide your bags on. Then you can relax more for the drive back.
16. Kitchen roll holder
Whether it’s under the bonnet of the car, or in the kitchen, bungee cords can be stored away and used as a handy kitchen roll holder. When you need to wipe away oil, spills, or grime when checking under the bonnet, having a kitchen roll or blue roll ready and hung up in place will be a life-saver. Just simply hook each end of the bungee cord to grips or holes you can find. In the house, you can hook the ends of a cord to a wire shelf, and hang your kitchen roll from there for easier access and a cleaner kitchen top.
17. Spine of an old three-ring binder
Sometimes it’s the random things we have lying around that can make the most ingenious tools. Take the spine of an old-three ring binder, for instance. All you have to do is punch out the rivets, and screw the spine to a wall (the garage wall is ideal). Then, use the rings to hang up all your bungee cords, straps and accessories, and voila, a tidier place!

Considerations for storing and organising bungee cords
Are there specific containers or organisers recommended for storing bungee cords?
We’ve detailed a few organisers like pipe organisers, ratchets and the like above, but in all honesty – it’s down to personal preference and what you have laying around for a DIY storage alternative.
How do I prevent bungee cords from tangling when stored?
Ensure any bungee cords wrapped with another bungee cord are done so tightly to prevent any loose bits from getting caught up elsewhere. It’s also advisable when using a ratchet strap hanger that you don’t squeeze as many bungee cords on them as you can. This can inevitably cause them to get tangled up with each other, especially if they’re compacted.
Should I clean bungee cords before storing them?
Absolutely. By cleaning any dirt or debris off your bungee cords before storing them away not only makes them more pleasant to use next time but can also help prolong their life. After all, dirt can get into the fibres and damage the cords over time if they aren’t looked after properly.
To clean your bungee cord, use a soft bristle brush to loosen off any debris, then wipe them down with a damp cloth and leave to dry. If there’s still a fair amount of dirt on your bungee cords, you may want to mix some dish soap in with some water and give it another scrub with the brush before leaving it to completely dry before storage.
Can bungee cords be stored outdoors?
Technically yes. We’ve advised in many of our blog posts about using bungee cords to tie down garden furniture, tarpaulin and the like. However, if your bungee cords aren’t being used for a specific purpose and simply need storing – we’d advise putting them somewhere cool and dry.
