Every fishing lover will know that those rods take up a fair amount of space, which can be particularly troublesome if you’re limited on boot room. What if there was a way to maximise available space in your car, with the method requiring minimal effort and minimal equipment? Luckily, we’ve discovered the perfect solution: a DIY bungee cord fishing rod holder.

Your fishing rods
Step 1: Assemble the bungee cord
To start crafting your very own bungee cord fishing rod holder, you’ll need to firstly assemble the cords. The size of your bungee cord will vary depending on the size of your vehicle, so make sure that it will fit comfortably (and securely) across the length of your roof.
Step 2: Loop bungee cords through car handles
Next, locate the roof handles and hook the first end of your bungee cord around it to secure in place. Repeat this process with the other end of the cord, bringing the two ends together so that the two hooks meet in the middle, attaching them together. Slide your hooks to the side so that you’re left with a tension rod, which will enable the bungee cord to carry weight in the center.
Step 3: Slide your rods through the bungee holder
Carefully slide your fishing rods through your rod holder, remembering to keep the eyelets facing downwards as you do so. This way, you’ll see that the majority of your fishing rod is secured at the top of your roof, leaving plenty of backseat space for other equipment.
Step 4: Assemble the bottom of your rods
Now it’s time to load up your car and get ready for your fishing extravaganza. Ensure that your rod’s handle is secure, resting it on top of a sturdy object to avoid any damage.
Step 5: Alternatively, screw in some hooks
Following Rated Red’s method, you can also secure the bottom of your fishing rods with another bungee cord – utilising both car handles in the front and back of your vehicle. If your vehicle is equipped with small clothes hangers rather than handles, there is a way to secure your bungee hook comfortably. Not to mention, this is a great way to put them to good use if you don’t often use your vehicle as a wardrobe.
To do this, you’ll need a drill to create two small holes in your clothes hangers. Once you’ve done this, grab a screwdriver and screws to attach some hooks to the hangers, making sure that these are secure. Now that your hooks are in place (on both sides), thread your bungee cords through and repeat the same process mentioned above.
